Context: The Careel Bay Wetlands project

Careel Bay Bushland Reserve is located in Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and houses a significant mangrove and wetland ecosystem. Mangroves play an essential ecological role in stabilising shorelines, filtering water, and providing habitat for diverse marine and bird species. The reserve sits adjacent to residential development and local soccer fields, highlighting visible interactions between human activity and natural systems. Interpretive signage and an extensive  managed boardwalks reflect community efforts toward conservation and education. The site provides a powerful local example of environmental processes in action, making it an ideal setting for place-based geographical inquiry within primary education.
